Eye-Spy The Future of Wearables

Guess what this is...

This isn't a crystal ball. It's not a seating map to a concert. And it's not a model of a new hovering aircraft.

It's a contact lens, and it has the potential to be as intelligent as Google Glass.

According to sammobile.com, "The patent application, filed in South Korea, shows a contact lens equipped with a tiny display, a camera, an antenna, and several sensors that detect movement and the most basic form of input using your eyes: blinking. The display projects images directly into the eye of the wearer. An external device, a smartphone, is needed for processing."

Imagine the immersive experience with the display directly in contact with your eye. In comparison, existing wearable device glasses still have the natural issue of a gap between the lens and the user's body. And VR lenses, although very immersive, require a relatively bulky piece of hardware attached to the user.

Google is also reportedly working on smart contact lenses, so be sure this will be a market entrant with much competition. Samsung may be up to something, but time will tell exactly what that something is. For now, we know that they've trademarked the name "Gear Blink," and that may be in relation to this new South Korean patent application.

No matter which way you look at it, the future will bring some revolutionary new wearable devices to the human body.
