Step into the future with the ‘Internet of Things’

The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming our lives at home, work and play by turning everyday items like lightbulbs and door locks – as well as amazing new gadgets – into powerful connected devices that can be controlled with our smartphones from afar.

Some of these devices are now being introduced into the workplace, helping companies save money, increase convenience and work smarter.

In addition to making our lives a little easier, these devices offer incredible opportunities to gather data on energy and consumer usage. Companies can now utilize this previously inaccessible data to improve products, create new offerings and make people’s lives better.

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas, a variety of new and amazing Internet of Things devices were introduced. Here are some of our favourites, which may find their way into your home this year.

Having trouble sleeping? Try the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed. This bed monitors you and your partner as you sleep, and uses two air chambers in the mattress to gently counter it to your back or side. It even detects snoring and raises your head to help you stop.

Once you’re up, time to cook breakfast!

Inirv React is an Internet-connected stove knob that can be fit on any electric or gas stove. With a motion sensor and timer that detects dangerous situations, it will alert you if the element is left on. Plus, you can adjust the temperature with your phone to keep the spaghetti from boiling over – without leaving the living room.

If you’re a foodie, the June Intelligent Convection Oven might be up your alley. This smart oven helps you cook your food exactly how you want it with no guesswork required. It has an HD camera mounted inside so you can use your smartphone to check on your cooking without opening the door, and its app lets you check in and control your oven from anywhere.

MySmartBlinds

MySmartBlinds lets you open and close any kind of blind with an app. It’s great if you’re staying out later than you thought and want to close them after dark, if you have hard-to-reach windows or if you want to set your offices’ blinds to close at the end of the day.

Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller

If you live or vacation in a city that has heavy lawn-watering restrictions, or just want to cut your water use, you might want to invest in the Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller. More than a timer, this device analyzes local forecasts, soil and plant types, sun exposure and more to create a customized watering schedule that its makers say can cut use by 50% while keeping your lawn gorgeous. It will even skip watering if rain is in the forecast and it integrates with Amazon’s Echo, Nest and other devices.
